Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta admits that he would have loved to have kept Emi Martinez this summer – but couldn’t guarantee him to be the first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Bernd Leno.
The huge Argentinian goalkeeper signed a four-year deal at Villa Park in September for a fee that could rise to £20 million with various add-ons.
Martinez has since established himself as Dean Smith’s No.1 and has been impressive to date by chalking up three clean sheets from Villa’s first six Premier League games, including a crucial penalty save on his Villa debut against Sheffield United.
The Argentinean stopper was in inspired form towards the end of the last term, but with Bernd Leno established as No 1, the best option for all parties was for a new direction.
“Obviously, it wasn’t in my plans to sell him,” Arteta said. “But we gave him the chance because he deserved it.
“He performed really, really well, but we have to balance the books. We have to make the right choices in the market and obviously, I couldn’t guarantee him to be the number one.
“He’s a very ambitious person, he has been working really hard and he can see now that the opportunity is there. He’s got the opportunity to play with Argentina and when a player asks you to do that I think you have to be open enough and tell him what you think about him.
“If he makes the decision to leave, you should try to support him because he deserves it for the way he has served the club over the years.”
