Arsenal’s latest signing, Gabriel Magalhaes says his decision to move to the North London club was backed by the messages he received from fans telling him to join the team.
The Brazilian international joined Arsenal from Lille for £27m on a long-term contract.
Manchester United, Everton, and Serie A club Napoli had all held an interest in centre-back Gabriel, who made 34 appearances in all competitions last season as Lille finished fourth in Ligue 1.
The 22-year-old bolsters Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta’s options in defense. He will wear the number 6 jersey for the Gunners for the 2020/2021 season.
Speaking to Arsenal’s media team after completing his move on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, Magalhaes stated that the fans played a ‘big part’ in his signing.
“So many fans were sending me messages asking me to join Arsenal, and that played a big part in me signing for this club,” Gabriel told Arsenal Digital.
“I know the history and traditions of this club and it is a pleasure being here. I am very happy and hope I can contribute to many titles with the Arsenal shirt.
“It was a very surreal experience, there were offers coming from a few different clubs.
“I spoke a lot with my family and my agents, I also spoke with some of Lille’s directors, but as I said, this club’s history and traditions and the team project for the next few years were very motivational for my decision to come here.
“So here I am, wearing the Arsenal shirt, I will give my best for it and come on you Gunners!”
