Arsenal’s teenage sensation Gabriel Martinelli spoke toDesimpedidosabout his ambitions with the Gunners.
The Brazilian moved to the Emirates as an unknown quantity. Not many people had seen or even heard of him before, but he quickly became the talk of the town.
Martinelli scored braces in each of his first two starts for Arsenal. His season ended prematurely due to a knee injury, but 10 goals and four assists in 15 starts is an incredible return for a teenager in his debut season in England.
Arsenal handed the youngster a new and improved four-year deal with an option to extend by a further year. Martinelli seemed certain that he had signed a five-year deal and has vowed to stay beyond that term if the Gunners decide to renew his contract.
He said: “I have just signed a five-year contract here and I will stay five years here, and if they renew with me again I will stay at this club, I love, I love this club. I dream of winning the league and the Champions League here.”
Arsenal, clearly, are nowhere near good enough to compete for either of the titles at the moment. However, they seem to be on the right path under Mikel Arteta and the FA Cup win last term will give them confidence to push on.
With a hectic schedule coming up, Arteta would love to have all his players fit and available. Sadly, though, Martinelli is expected to miss the start of the season withArsenal’s medical teamconfirming that he will only be back by the end of this calendar year.
The adaptation to the speed and physicality of the Premier League is never easy for players coming from abroad. Martinelli hit the ground running to everyone’s surprise and Arsenal fans will be hoping that he can continue his good form when he returns.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reportedly set to stay, and with the arrival of an experienced head like Willian, Martinelli has a number of role models to learn form which will only make him better in the coming years.
