Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has given a long interview to the club’s TV station on Monday, detailing their market situation and the losses they had during the Coronavirus pandemic.
One of the main topics was the rumours about David Luiz, since the player has recently claimed he’d like to be back at the club at some point.
With the Brazilian’s agent Kia Joorabchian cooling down the gossip and saying the defender is happy at Arsenal, Luis Filipe Vieira has also claimed that his return to Lisbon sounds a little bit unlikely for now.
But it turns out that when saying it, he’s also claimed that the 33-year-old is actually signing a contract extension with the Gunners.
“I spoke to him yesterday, we have a father to son relationship. He was in the car with the agent, and will renew with Arsenal for two years”,said Luis Filipe Vieira (viaA Bola).
“David Luiz loves Benfica, but he’s 33 years old and wants to earn more money. His salary in England is unthinkable in Portugal. It may be that it becomes a case like Rui Costa, who called me one day, was embarking to Mozambique, and said it was time to return, for me to make a contract, define a salary, which he signed. If David Luiz does the same, he can return.”
Reports from the English media recently said David Luiz signed a one-year deal with Arsenal last summer, with the club having the right to extend it for a further one.
Now if he got to a new contract for two more, that’s because the Gunners are pretty happy with his form in his first season at the club.
